Revitalizing Rome's Libraries: A Design Triumph

Ragu Communication's Award-Winning Rebranding of Biblioteche di Roma

In a world where design and innovation intersect, Ragu Communication has breathed new life into the identity of Rome's public libraries, Biblioteche di Roma. The rebranding, which won the Golden A' Design Award in 2022, is a testament to the power of design in transforming public perception and accessibility.

The inspiration behind the rebranding was the need to reflect the essence of Biblioteche di Roma, an agile institution that has served the public for 25 years. The new identity is a symbol of innovation and accessibility, with the open book - a departure from the closed book in the historic logo - serving as a powerful symbol of the library's openness to all.

Ragu Communication's design is unique in its simplicity and effectiveness. The open book doubles as the first letter of the brand, creating a clean, essential graphic sign that resonates with both local and international institutions. The new identity is tied to the institutional brand Roma Culture of the Department for Cultural Growth of the Municipality of Rome, a stakeholder in the Biblioteche system.

The rebranding was applied to all physical and digital touchpoints of the Biblioteche di Roma system, including stationery, digital touchpoints, advertising, out-of-home media, and signage. The design team, led by Creative Head Martina Venettoni and Creative Director & Art Stefano Coccia, worked diligently to ensure the new identity was seamlessly integrated across all platforms.

The project, which began in Rome in January 2021 and was delivered in April 2021, was not without its challenges. The team had to create a brand identity that conveyed the idea of an agile and modern institutional structure, a task they accomplished with aplomb. The new identity has had a significant impact, enhancing the recognizability of the service and making it more accessible to users.

In conclusion, Ragu Communication's rebranding of Biblioteche di Roma is a shining example of how design can transform public institutions. The open book logo, a symbol of accessibility and innovation, has redefined the library's identity and made it more appealing to the public. This project underscores the importance of design in shaping public perception and accessibility.
